Mufti Mohammad Sayeed (1936–2016)

Early life and political rise

Sayeed was born on 12 January 1936 in the town of Bijbehara in the Kashmir Valley. Over several decades he moved from local public service into wider political roles, taking part in both state and national affairs. He worked to build a regional political platform that could address local concerns while negotiating with the central government.

He led the Jammu and Kashmir government from 2 November 2002 to 2 November 2005 and returned to office on 1 March 2015, holding the post until his death.
