Overview

The Moody Church is a historic Protestant congregation in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. Often called, incorrectly, "Moody Memorial Church," it is best known as an evangelical, Bible-centered parish that grew out of the ministry of 19th-century evangelist Dwight L. Moody. The congregation has maintained an active program of weekly worship, public teaching and community outreach for more than a century.

History and origins

Founded in the 19th century as part of the revival movement led by Dwight L. Moody, the church developed alongside related institutions devoted to evangelism and Christian education. Over time the congregation became associated with other Moody ministries, and its pastors and lay leaders emphasized preaching, Bible study and missionary support as core activities. Its continuity through social and cultural change has made it a recognizable landmark among American evangelical churches.

Building and characteristics

The present sanctuary was constructed in the 1920s: construction began in 1924 and the building was dedicated on November 8, 1925. The footprint of the facility measures roughly 140 feet by 225 feet, and it was designed to house a large auditorium-style sanctuary suitable for public preaching and musical worship. Architectural detailing, finishing materials and interior arrangements reflect the ambitions of a major urban congregation of the period.

Ministries and community role

The Moody Church offers a range of programs typical of a large urban parish: regular Sunday services, Bible classes, youth and family ministries, and outreach initiatives that connect with local neighborhoods. It has historically made use of printed and broadcast media to distribute sermons and teaching, and it cooperates with other evangelical organizations in support of domestic and international mission work.

Notable facts and distinctions
