A moat is a defensive trench encircling a fortification, typically intended to impede attackers and protect those inside. Typical elements include the ditch itself, the inner bank where the wall stood, and an outer slope or counterscarp. Water supplied to moats often came from nearby rivers, streams, springs or artificial reservoirs, and the flow could be controlled with sluices and gates. A wet moat adds an obstacle for siege engines and infantry; a dry moat creates a deep obstacle for scaling or undermining. In many examples the moat worked with a drawbridge, causeway, or gatehouse to regulate access.
History and development
Water-filled defenses have antecedents in a wide range of cultures and periods. In medieval Europe moats became common features of castles and fortified towns; engineering evolved as builders learned to manage water supply and to connect moats with other defensive works. - Sanitation and resources: In some sites moats were used as fish ponds or to divert waste; however, stagnant water could also create health and maintenance problems.
Beyond military aims, moats contributed to status and landscape design. Nobility and monarchs used broad, reflective moats to enhance the appearance of residences, turning a practical feature into an aesthetic one.

Not all moats were permanent water bodies; ditches without water are often called dry moats and remain effective obstacles. Moats surrounded both individual castles and fortified towns, and they appear in many regions worldwide with local adaptations. While they helped limit the spread of fire in timber constructions, they could also become vectors for disease if poorly drained. Today many historic moats survive as archaeological features or landscaped ponds; preservation projects balance heritage, ecology and modern urban needs.
