History and development

The denomination traces its institutional beginning to the late 19th century. It was formally established in 1878 and long operated under the name Svenska Missionsförbundet. Over the 20th century it grew into a nationwide network of congregations while participating in broader ecumenical conversations in Sweden and internationally.

Beliefs, structure and practices

Doctrinally the church occupied a moderate evangelical position, holding to core Christian convictions while allowing diversity in worship style and theological emphasis. Its governance combined congregational autonomy with cooperative national bodies for training, mission and administration. The denomination supported theological education, social initiatives and distributed authority between ordained clergy and active laity.

Activities, membership and social role

In the early 21st century the Mission Covenant Church was engaged in parish ministry, international mission partnerships, diaconal work and cultural activities such as music and religious education. By 2009 it reported about 61,000 members organized in roughly 700 congregations. It participated in public debates on social issues and worked with other churches on relief and development projects.

Merger and legacy

In a move reflecting growing ecumenical cooperation among Swedish free churches, the Mission Covenant Church joined with other denominations to form the Uniting Church in Sweden. The merger was completed in 2012, when the new body — the Uniting Church in Sweden — began operating as a consolidated denomination. The Mission Covenant legacy continues there in patterns of worship, mission priority and emphasis on lay engagement.
