Geography and environment

The county is characterized by steep ridges, high valleys and cool mountain streams. The New River—one of the oldest rivers in North America—flows through parts of Ashe County and supports fishing and scenic recreation. Prominent local features include Mount Jefferson and a mix of hardwood and evergreen forests typical of the southern Appalachians.

History and development

Created from neighboring territory in the late 1700s, Ashe County developed through subsistence farming, timber and small-scale industry. Over the 19th and 20th centuries the arrival of roads and rail improved access while preserving much of the region’s rural character. The county’s population was recorded as 24,384 in the 2000 census.

Economy, culture and recreation

Today the local economy blends agriculture, light manufacturing, and tourism. Ashe County is widely known for Christmas tree and nursery production and for outdoor recreation such as hiking, trout fishing and paddling on the New River. Small towns like West Jefferson and Jefferson host galleries, craft shops and seasonal festivals that attract visitors from the region.
