Milko Kelemen (March 30, 1924 – March 8, 2018) was a Croatian composer whose career spanned much of the postwar European avant-garde. Known for combining traditional instrumental writing with contemporary techniques and electronic resources, he became one of Croatia's most internationally visible composers and a persistent advocate for new music.

Kelemen worked in a variety of settings: concert music, chamber pieces, vocal works and stage projects. He explored timbre and form through both acoustic ensembles and electronic means, spending periods working at the Experimental Siemens Studio in Munich. Music Biennale Zagreb

In 1961 Kelemen founded the Music Biennale Zagreb, an international festival for contemporary music that introduced many audiences in Southeast Europe to the latest developments in composition and performance. He served as its president from 1961 until 1979, guiding the festival through formative years and helping to create contacts between composers, performers and institutions across Europe.

Residencies and international recognition

Throughout his life Kelemen accepted invitations abroad and took part in European cultural exchanges. He was invited to Berlin as a Composer in Residence, and his work benefited from collaborations and residencies that connected him to contemporary scenes in Western Europe.
