Early life and priesthood

Vlk was born in the Písek District of Southern Bohemia. He was formed as a priest during the era of communist rule in Czechoslovakia, when the Catholic Church faced restrictions and surveillance. Like many clergy of his generation, his ministry combined pastoral care with navigating the limitations imposed by the state.

Archbishopric and cardinalate

As Archbishop of Prague, Vlk led one of the country's most prominent dioceses. His responsibilities included overseeing parish life, engaging with civil authorities, and representing the Czech church on the international stage. His creation as a cardinal in 1994 gave him a role in the wider governance of the global Catholic Church.

Public positions and activism

Vlk was known for speaking on social and moral issues. He criticized the rise of far‑right movements and xenophobic rhetoric in Central Europe and took part in public demonstrations of solidarity. Notably, he joined Jewish protests in 2007 when right‑wing groups planned a march through Prague's historic Jewish quarter on the anniversary of Kristallnacht, signaling a commitment to interfaith respect and opposition to intolerance.

Legacy and death

Throughout his public life Vlk was associated with rebuilding the church's institutions after decades of suppression and with efforts to promote dialogue across communities. He died in Prague on 18 March 2017 at the age of 84, after an illness; reports state he died of cancer. His career is remembered for combining ecclesiastical leadership with civic engagement during a formative era for the Czech Republic.
