Mewar (Mewad): Historic region of southern Rajasthan, India

Mewar is a historic region in southern Rajasthan, India, noted for its Rajput heritage, the Sisodia dynasty, major forts at Chittorgarh and Udaipur, and a long tradition of resistance to imperial power.

Overview

Mewar, also spelled Mewad, is a culturally and historically distinct region in the southern part of Rajasthan in India. It formed the core territory of a Rajput polity ruled for many centuries by the Sisodia (also called Guhilot or Gehlot) dynasty. The region is best known for its hill forts, lakes, and a heritage of martial and artistic patronage that shaped northwestern Indian history.

Geography and main centres

Mewar comprises a mix of arid plains and rocky hills of the Aravalli range. Its historic capitals have included the fortified hill-top of Chittorgarh and the later lake city of Udaipur, which became an important political and cultural centre after the medieval period. Other towns in the cultural orbit include Nathdwara and Kumbhalgarh.

History

Mewar developed as a regional kingdom under Rajput rulers who consolidated power across local chiefdoms. In the medieval and early modern eras the region engaged in frequent conflict with neighboring sultanates and later the Mughal Empire. Mewar's rulers are remembered for resisting imperial incorporation, most famously through leaders such as Rana Sanga and Maharana Pratap, who symbolize Rajput independence in later traditions.

Culture, art and architecture

The region produced notable architecture and painting schools. Its hill forts, palaces, temples and stepwells display a blend of martial and devotional aesthetics. Mewar painting, a substyle of Rajput painting, flourished under royal patronage and is valued for its bold color and narrative scenes. Crafts, music and courtly ceremonies were important elements of Mewar identity.

Notable locations and legacy

  • Chittorgarh Fort — an emblematic medieval fortress and UNESCO-listed monument cluster in the region's narrative.
  • Udaipur — known for its lakes, palaces and as a center of Mewar administration after the medieval period.
  • Kumbhalgarh — notable for its lengthy defensive walls and fort complex.

Today Mewar is an administrative and cultural part of the modern state of Rajasthan, and its history remains important for tourism, scholarship and regional identity.
