The cluster contains numerous hot, blue-white stars together with cooler, fainter members; total counts range from several dozen to a few hundred depending on the membership criteria used.

Stars in Messier 7 are relatively young on astronomical timescales. Estimates place the cluster's age on the order of a few hundred million years, so its population still includes early-type stars that give the cluster a blue-white appearance. History and discovery

The cluster was known in antiquity and noted by the Greco-Roman astronomer Ptolemy, which is the origin of its historical name. In the modern cataloguing era it was recorded by Charles Messier and appears as M7 in his 18th-century list of non-comet objects. It also carries the New General Catalogue number NGC 6475 used by professional astronomers.

M7 is straightforward to locate because of its proximity to Antares and the distinctive shape of Scorpius. It is an attractive target in binoculars and small telescopes where individual stars resolve easily.
