Overview

Mason County is a rural county located in the central part of the U.S. state of Illinois. It was established in 1841 and takes its name from George Mason, a Virginia statesman and author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights. The county seat is Havana, a small river town that serves as the administrative and cultural center. According to the 2010 census, the county's population was 14,666.

Geography and environment

Mason County occupies a landscape of rolling farmland, river lowlands and small woodlots. The Illinois River forms part of its western edge, influencing local recreation and wildlife. Agriculture—especially corn and soybeans—dominates land use, interspersed with pasture and conservation areas. Small streams and wetlands provide habitat for migratory birds and native plants.

History and development

The county was carved from neighboring territories during Illinois' mid-19th century growth. Early settlement followed river and overland routes; towns grew around mills, ferry crossings and later rail and road connections. Over time the economy shifted from frontier trade to organized agriculture, with community institutions such as schools and courthouses marking civic life.

Communities and government

Havana remains the county seat and focal point for government services, while several smaller towns and unincorporated places provide local commerce and residential areas. County government is responsible for courts, public records, roads and local social services. Residents often travel regionally for higher education and major medical services.

Economy, recreation and notable facts

Farming is the economic backbone, supplemented by small manufacturing, retail and service businesses. The Illinois River and county parks offer fishing, boating and birdwatching opportunities. Mason County's mix of historic main streets, agricultural landscapes and river access makes it representative of central Illinois' rural character.
