History and cultural identity

Indigenous peoples, principally the Wampanoag, inhabited the island for millennia. European colonization began in the 17th century, after which the island developed fisheries, farming and later resort communities. Over time the Vineyard became known both for year‑round residents who sustain local industries and for an influx of seasonal visitors who shape its cultural and economic rhythms.

Economy and visitor appeal

Tourism is the island's leading economic driver: beaches, historic districts, local arts, and culinary offerings attract visitors from across New England and beyond. Agriculture, fishing and small businesses complement the visitor economy. Classic summer activities include boating, birdwatching, cycling and attending cultural events in village centers.
