Maiden Tower (Giz Galasi), historic monument in Baku's Old City
A cylindrical 12th-century stone tower in Baku's Inner City, the Maiden Tower is a UNESCO‑listed landmark, museum and national symbol whose origins and purpose remain debated.
The Maiden Tower, locally called Giz Galasi, stands within the fortified Old City (Icherisheher) of Azerbaijan's capital, Baku. Its rounded profile and prominent position on the shoreline make it one of the city's best‑known monuments and a frequent emblem on official material.

The structure is a freestanding, roughly cylindrical masonry tower rising from a thick stone base to a roof terrace. Built of local stone, it preserves a compact plan, buttressed lower walls and a sequence of internal levels reached by ramps or stair passages. The top platform offers views across the Old City and the Caspian approaches.
- Plan: circular mass with solid foundations
- Construction: dressed stone blocks and vaulting
- Interior: successive floors, niches and access routes
- Roof: lookout/terrace historically used for observation
The tower is often described as an ancient tower because it stands on a site with deep antiquity. Archaeologists and historians note architectural phases and reused material that indicate repairs and alterations over many centuries.
Its origins are debated. Some scholars point to pre‑Islamic or early Islamic foundations associated with Zoroastrian or Persian and early medieval activity, while others emphasize later medieval construction during the Shirvan period. The monument has witnessed the presence and influence of Sassanian, Arab, Shirvanid, Ottoman and Russian administrations in the region.
Today the Maiden Tower contains a museum that interprets the site's archaeology, architectural history and local legends; visitors can view displays and reach the viewing platform to see the Old City from above. The modest exhibition is maintained in the restored interior and is presented as a public museum.
Beyond its physical fabric, the tower holds strong cultural significance. It is a national symbol and appears frequently on coins, banknotes and official stationery. The Maiden Tower and the nearby Palace of the Shirvanshahs form the principal core of Baku's Old City that is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and the monument continues to attract researchers and tourists interested in the layered history of the Caucasus littoral.
