Luanda Province, Angola

Geography and population

Located along the Atlantic coast in the northwest of Angola, Luanda Province combines an urban metropolitan area with adjacent peri-urban and coastal zones. Though relatively small in land area compared with other Angolan provinces, it contains the largest share of the country's urban population. The provincial capital's coordinates are commonly cited in reference works: 8°58′59″S 13°16′59″E. History

The region developed around a Portuguese colonial settlement established in the 16th century and later became a central node in transatlantic trade. Luanda grew as a port and administrative center during colonial rule, and the city and province played important roles during the independence movement of the 20th century.
