History and administrative change

Like many Swiss cantonal subdivisions, the Lucerne District evolved over time in response to political and administrative reforms. On 1 January 2013 the district was restructured: it ceased to exist in its previous form and was divided into two new entities, the urban district Lucerne-Stadt and the surrounding rural district Lucerne-Land. The change aimed to reflect differing needs between the densely populated city core and its neighboring communities.

Geography and composition

The former district encompassed the city of Lucerne and a number of adjacent municipalities, combining urban, suburban and peri-urban landscapes. It bordered Lake Lucerne and formed part of a broader region that is important for commerce, transport and tourism.
