LNER Class Y11 (Simplex): Petrol 0-4-0 Shunting Locomotives

Small class of three petrol-mechanical 0-4-0 shunters built by Motor Rail (Simplex) for the LNER between 1919 and 1925; later carried British Railways numbers 15097–15099.

The LNER Class Y11 was a small series of petrol-powered 0-4-0 shunting locomotives acquired by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) between 1919 and 1925. Built by the Motor Rail & Tram Car Company Ltd and marketed under the Simplex name, the three examples were intended for light yard, works and dockside duties where rapid start-up, compact size and simple mechanical layout offered practical advantages over small steam engines.

Design and characteristics

Classified by the LNER as Y11, these locomotives used a petrol-mechanical arrangement: an internal combustion engine coupled to a mechanical transmission and final drive suitable for low-speed shunting.
