Lawrence Grant "Lawrie" Leslie (17 March 1935 – 4 June 2019) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Born in Edinburgh, Leslie made the transition from junior football into the Scottish top flight and later spent much of his career in the English league system. He was capped five times by Scotland in the early 1960s and is remembered as part of the generation that bridged the post‑war boom and the modern era of British football.
Playing profile
As a goalkeeper Leslie fulfilled the traditional responsibilities of his position: organizing the defence, saving shots, and dealing with crosses and set pieces. Contemporary reports and recollections from supporters describe him as a dependable shot‑stopper who brought calm and experience to his teams. Goalkeepers of his era relied heavily on positional awareness and handling in heavy playing conditions; Leslie's career spanned both Scottish and English styles of play, which required adaptability.
Club career
Leslie's professional path followed a pattern familiar to many Scottish players of his time: starting at a local junior club and progressing to the top Scottish division before moving to England. His club career included:
- Newtongrange Star – the junior side where he developed as a young goalkeeper.
- Hibernian (Scottish top flight) – one of the prominent Edinburgh clubs where he established himself at senior level, representing a step up from junior football.
- Airdrieonians – another Scottish club in the Scottish First Division, where he continued to feature in domestic competition.
- West Ham United – his first move to the English Football League, competing in the English First Division of the period.
- Stoke City – another First Division side that benefited from Leslie's experience between the posts.
- Millwall – a club competing in the English Second Division during his time there, where he contributed veteran presence.
- Southend United – a Fourth Division side toward the end of his career; Leslie retired from professional football after the 1968–69 season.
International career
Leslie represented Scotland on five occasions in the early 1960s. Earning national selection in that era reflected strong domestic form and recognition by selectors who balanced players from both Scottish and English clubs. Although not a long‑serving international, Leslie's caps placed him among the notable Scottish goalkeepers of his generation.
Legacy and later life
After retiring from the professional game following the 1968–69 season, Leslie largely remained out of the national spotlight. He is remembered by supporters of the clubs he served for steady performances and as a player who successfully navigated moves between Scottish and English football at a time when such transfers were becoming increasingly common.
Leslie died on 4 June 2019 at the age of 84. Obituaries and remembrances highlighted his contribution to each club and noted his five international appearances for Scotland. His career illustrates the mid‑20th century path of many Scottish players: rising from junior ranks, competing at top domestic levels, and extending their careers through moves across the border to England.
