Lawrence County lies in the western portion of South Dakota and contains part of the Black Hills National Forest. History and development

The county was created in 1875 during the period of rapid settlement that followed gold discoveries in the Black Hills. Mining towns grew quickly; some later evolved into service and tourism centers. Mining activity, notably at the Homestake site in Lead, shaped local economy and settlement patterns for more than a century before large-scale operations ceased.

Today the county economy blends tourism, recreation, light industry and services for residents and visitors. Deadwood is known for its preserved 19th-century streetscape, museums and gaming establishments that draw heritage tourists.
