Overview and geography
Located along Oklahoma's eastern boundary with Arkansas, Le Flore County occupies a landscape of rolling hills, forested ridges and river valleys. Much of the county lies within the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains, and areas of national and state forest provide habitat for wildlife and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Rivers and streams cross the county and have shaped both settlement and land use.
History and cultural background
The territory that became Le Flore County was long associated with the Choctaw Nation and other indigenous peoples. The county was organized at the time of Oklahoma statehood in 1907 and takes its name from the Le Flore family, who were prominent in regional history. Local communities grew around transportation routes, timber, and agriculture through the 20th century.
Economy and population
Le Flore County's economy mixes forestry, agriculture, light industry and services. Timber and related businesses have been historically important, and tourism connected to hunting, fishing and hiking in the Ouachita foothills contributes to the local economy. The county's population includes long-standing Native American communities alongside other rural and small-town residents.
