Lars Mortimer (22 March 1946 – 25 August 2014) was a Swedish cartoonist and comics artist whose work became a familiar part of Swedish popular culture. He created and wrote the comic strip Hälge, which he produced from September 1991 until his death in August 2014. Mortimer had an earlier, long-running strip called Bobo that appeared between 1973 and 1990.

Early life and background

Mortimer was born in Sundsvall in Västernorrland County. He had family roots of British ancestry and later settled in Hälsingland. Known privately as a family man, he had two children. His upbringing in northern Sweden informed much of the rural setting and nature-oriented humour in his comics.

Main works and characteristics

Hälge, Mortimer’s best-known creation, centers on a moose protagonist and plays on themes of hunting, countryside life and the clash between wildlife and people. The strip is notable for its concise, situation-based gags, recurring cast and a tone that mixes gentle satire with observational comedy. Bobo was an earlier serial strip that helped establish Mortimer’s presence in Swedish newspapers during the 1970s and 1980s.

Publication history and reception

Hälge was carried in newspapers and, beginning in 2001, appeared as a regular monthly section in a national paper. The strip reached a broad Swedish readership and was widely recognised for its distinctive central character and rural humour. Over the years Mortimer’s cartoons were gathered into collections and republished in different formats for fans of the strip.

Mortimer died after a short illness on 25 August 2014 in Alfta, Hälsingland, at the age of 68. His work remains a reference point for contemporary Swedish comic artists and for readers who remember Hälge’s mix of gentle satire and nature-based themes.
