Course and watershed

The river begins in the higher ground of Wayne County and flows roughly southwest through a watershed that includes parts of Lackawanna and Luzerne counties before joining the Susquehanna at Duryea. Along its route it passes through and near several communities, most notably Scranton, where the valley was heavily developed in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The channel varies from narrow, wooded stream in the headwaters to broader, modified sections in urban areas.
