Arche (also known as Jupiter XLIII and provisionally S/2002 J 1) is a small irregular satellite of Jupiter. It was identified in 2002 by a team from the University of Hawaii led by Scott S. Sheppard. The discovery added another member to the growing family of distant, faint Jovian moons found with modern ground-based surveys. The object received its official name, Arche, from Greek mythological tradition in 2005.

Arche is tiny by planetary moon standards, with an estimated diameter of roughly 3 kilometres. It follows a distant, inclined, and retrograde orbit around Jupiter. Key orbital parameters provide a concise picture of its motion:

Group membership and origin
Arche is considered part of the Carme group, a collection of small moons that share similar orbital distances, inclinations and retrograde motion. Members of this group are clustered between roughly 23 and 24 million kilometres from Jupiter and show comparable orbital tilts, which suggests a common origin. The prevailing interpretation is that the Carme group consists of fragments from a single parent body that was captured by Jupiter and later disrupted — a scenario that explains the group's shared orbital characteristics and related surface properties (Carme group).
Discovery and naming
The moon was discovered during surveys undertaken by astronomers at the University of Hawaii and announced by the discovery team led by Scott S. Sheppard in 2002. It carried the provisional designation S/2002 J 1 until the International Astronomical Union approved the name Arche in 2005. The chosen name comes from early Greek sources that list Arche among an expanded set of Muses alongside Aoede, Melete and Mneme; this classical naming follows the convention of giving retrograde Jovian moons names that end in "-e" (Arche and the Muses).
Scientific significance and observing challenges
Though small and faint, Arche and its siblings are valuable to planetary science because they preserve evidence of capture and collisional history in the outer Jovian system. Studies of their orbits, colours and size distribution help constrain when and how capture occurred and whether group members share a compositional affinity. Observationally, such moons are difficult targets: they require large telescopes and careful image processing to detect, track and measure against background stars. Continued monitoring refines orbital elements and can reveal subtle dynamical interactions with other small satellites.
