Overview

Kanjut Sar is a high mountain in the Karakoram range of northern Pakistan, rising to about 7,760 metres (25,460 ft). It belongs to the Hispar Muztagh subrange and stands among the world's highest peaks, often noted for its remote location and challenging alpine terrain. The name is sometimes rendered as Kunjudh Sar in older sources.

Location and geology

The peak lies within the mountainous region administered as Gilgit-Baltistan and is surrounded by glaciers and steep ridgelines typical of the Karakoram. The Karakoram itself is part of the greater uplift produced by the ongoing collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, creating jagged summits, deep glacial valleys and active mountain-building processes that shape local climate and hydrology.

Characteristics

  • Elevation: approximately 7,760 metres.
  • Range: Hispar Muztagh within the Karakoram.
  • Topography: steep faces, long ridges and complex glaciation.
  • Nearby features: large valley glaciers and subsidiary peaks; a lower neighbouring summit is sometimes distinguished as Kanjut Sar II.

Climbing history

The mountain was first reached in 1959 by an expedition whose summit party included the climber Camillo Pellissier. Since that ascent, Kanjut Sar has attracted mountaineers seeking high-altitude, technical climbs in a fairly remote setting. Routes require sustained ice and rock climbing skills and careful logistics because of complex glacier approaches.

Importance and notable facts

Kanjut Sar is often referenced in discussions of high Karakoram peaks because it ranks among the world's highest mountains and exemplifies the severe alpine conditions of the region. It contributes meltwater to local glacier systems, which in turn feed rivers and support downstream communities. For climbers, it represents a test of high-altitude technical ability rather than the sheer altitude of the eight-thousanders.
