Alstom Coradia Juniper family of British electric multiple units
A family of electric multiple-unit trains built by Alstom for services in Great Britain. Juniper units share a Coradia design approach, have several variants for different power systems and were introduced in the late 1990s–2000s.
The Alstom Coradia Juniper is a series of electric multiple-unit (EMU) trains produced for passenger services on the rail network in Great Britain. Conceptually part of Alstom’s Coradia product line, the Juniper family was designed to provide modern commuter, suburban and airport-link services with a common technical approach and production process. The sets entered service in the late 1990s and early 2000s and have been operated by several train companies across Britain.

Juniper units emphasize modular construction and common components across variants to simplify maintenance and reduce lifecycle cost. Typical characteristics include aluminum or light-alloy bodyshells, multiple-unit capability for flexible train lengths, and interiors laid out for high-frequency services. The family was produced to work with different electrical supplies and signalling arrangements, so some variants run from 25 kV AC overhead lines while others are equipped for 750 V DC third-rail supply. Common safety and operational features include modern train protection systems, accessible passenger areas, and provisions for rapid boarding and alighting on busy suburban routes.
Variants and operators
- Class 334 — an EMU type developed for regional and suburban services in Scotland, typically operating from electrified overhead lines.
- Class 458 — designed for suburban and commuter services in the south-west of England; sets have been refurbished and reconfigured in service to meet evolving capacity needs.
- Class 460 — originally used on airport-express services; aspects of these sets were later adapted or transferred as fleets were updated.

History and development
Alstom’s Juniper family was developed as part of its Coradia range of passenger trains, which also includes diesel and electric designs. The Juniper project involved manufacturing activity in the UK alongside subcontract work elsewhere; for example, a subcontract awarded to Ganz Hunslet in Hungary produced a batch of bodyshells during the late 1990s. Juniper units were introduced to renew ageing rolling stock and to support growing commuter and airport services.
