The Kawasaki Heavy Industries & CRRC Qingdao Sifang C151C is the sixth-generation electric multiple unit introduced on Singapore's principal east–west and north–south rapid transit corridors. Manufactured through a collaboration between Kawasaki Heavy Industries and CRRC Qingdao Sifang, twelve C151C trainsets were procured to expand fleet capacity and modernize rolling stock on the network that serves the East West Line and the North South Line.
Design and passenger features
The C151C series presents a contemporary interior and systems package intended to improve passenger comfort, information, safety and operational efficiency compared with earlier fleets. Interiors feature updated seating layouts, clearer route maps and dynamic passenger information displays, while systems upgrades include modern automatic train control interfaces, CCTV surveillance and energy-efficient subsystems such as improved traction and lighting. Accessibility improvements were included to aid mobility-impaired users, following common standards for handrails, priority seating and doorway thresholds.
Typical characteristics
- Purpose-built for high-capacity urban metro service with frequent stops and quick boarding.
- Contemporary passenger information systems and CCTV for situational awareness.
- Energy-efficient components and improved maintenance access for higher reliability.
- Compliance with accessibility and safety standards adopted across the Singapore MRT network.
Delivery, testing and introduction
Delivery of the C151C fleet took place between 2017 and 2019. The first trainset arrived on 27 October 2017, and an interior preview with two trainsets on display was held at Tuas Depot on 28 February 2018. After static and dynamic testing, initial passenger operations began in late 2018: the first three trainsets entered service on 30 September 2018, with another three joining by the end of 2018 and the remaining six commencing service in early 2019. Acceptance trials and phased introduction allowed crews and systems to be certified before full deployment.
Operational role and significance
Procured by Singapore's transport authorities and operated on the network's established corridors, the C151C series increased the number of trains available on the North–South and East–West routes and contributed to fleet renewal. When fully introduced, the new trainsets raised the total count of trains serving these lines, supporting efforts to reduce crowding, improve service frequency and replace older vehicles nearing the end of their service lives.
Context and related models
The C151C belongs to a lineage of generation-based procurements for Singapore's heavy metro lines, where successive batches incorporate new technology and refinements in passenger ergonomics, reliability and maintainability. The partnership between a long-established Japanese rolling stock builder and a major Chinese manufacturer reflects a broader international trend of joint ventures and cooperative projects in urban rail procurement.
