Juan Carlos García (8 March 1988 – 8 January 2018) was a Honduran professional footballer best known as a left-back. During his career he played for several leading clubs in Honduras and abroad and became a regular for the Honduras national team. His promising career was interrupted by illness, and he died aged 29.
Club career
García began his senior career in Honduras with C.D. Marathón before moving to C.D. Olimpia, two of the country's largest clubs. He also spent a spell on loan with Spanish side CD Tenerife, gaining experience in a European setting. In 2013 he signed for English club Wigan Athletic; however, his time there was curtailed by health problems that prevented him from establishing himself in English football.
International career
García made his senior debut for Honduras in 2009 and went on to earn more than 30 caps. He was selected for multiple CONCACAF Gold Cup squads and was part of the Honduras squad at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, representing his country at the sport's highest international tournament.
Playing style and role
As a left-back, García combined defensive responsibilities with support for the attack. He was noted for his work rate, positional awareness and ability to deliver crosses from wide areas. Coaches used him for defensive solidity while also expecting overlapping runs to assist forward players.
Illness, death and legacy
During his time under contract in England García was diagnosed with leukemia, an illness that ended his professional playing career and prompted treatment and a long recovery attempt. He died on 8 January 2018 at the age of 29. His passing prompted tributes from teammates, clubs and fans in Honduras and abroad, who remembered him for both his contributions on the pitch and his character off it.
