Overview
Juan Carlos Maccarone (19 October 1940 – 29 March 2015) was an Argentine Roman Catholic prelate who served as bishop in two Argentine dioceses during the 1990s and early 2000s. He is principally remembered for his episcopal appointments and for a public scandal in 2005 that led to his resignation.
Ecclesiastical career
Maccarone was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Chascomús in 1996 and later named to the Diocese of Santiago del Estero in February 1999. As a diocesan bishop he carried responsibilities typical of that office: pastoral leadership, oversight of clergy, liturgical and administrative duties, and representation of the local church in national and regional ecclesiastical matters. Both Chascomús and Santiago del Estero are territorial dioceses within the Argentine Catholic hierarchy.
Controversy and resignation
In 2005 a videotape was published that appeared to show Maccarone engaged in sexual activity with a 23-year-old man. The public release of the recording produced widespread attention and controversy in Argentina. Facing a deteriorating public position, Maccarone tendered his resignation as bishop on 19 August 2005. The episode was widely reported in national media and became a focal point for discussions about clerical conduct and accountability.
Aftermath and significance
- Resignation: Maccarone stepped down from active episcopal ministry following the video's publication and ensuing public reaction.
- Public debate: The case contributed to broader conversations in Argentina about clerical celibacy, privacy, and the mechanisms for disciplining clergy when allegations of sexual misconduct arise.
- Later life: He died on 29 March 2015 at the age of 74.
While the Maccarone case is one of the more prominent instances of a bishop's resignation under public scrutiny in contemporary Argentine church history, it also illustrates recurring challenges faced by religious institutions when private conduct becomes public and when faith communities seek to reconcile pastoral care with standards of clerical behavior.
