José Manuel Estepa Llaurens, Spanish cardinal and Military Archbishop (1926–2019)

Role and responsibilities

From 1986 until 2003 Estepa Llaurens was the Military Archbishop (head of the Military Ordinariate) of Spain. In that capacity he oversaw the pastoral care of service members, their families and civilian staff attached to the defense forces. His responsibilities included the supervision and formation of military chaplains, the organization of liturgical and sacramental ministry in military contexts, and collaboration with both ecclesiastical and state authorities on matters of conscience and service.

Major events and cardinalate

On 20 November 2010 Pope Benedict XVI created him Cardinal-Priest of S. Gabriele Arcangelo all’Acqua Traversa in a consistory celebrated at St. Peter's Basilica. The consistory itself was announced and recorded by Vatican authorities; the formal act associated Estepa Llaurens with a Roman title church, as is customary. Because he was over the age limit for electors at the time of his elevation, he did not take part in a papal conclave.

Contributions and legacy

Estepa Llaurens is remembered for strengthening structures of military chaplaincy and for emphasizing the pastoral and human aspects of ministry within hierarchical settings. His tenure included efforts to ensure that spiritual care adapted to the mobility and unique conditions of armed service life. Colleagues and successors have noted his administrative competence and pastoral sensitivity.

Later life and death

After resigning from the military ordinariate in 2003 he remained an influential voice in Spanish ecclesiastical circles. He died on 21 July 2019 in Madrid, at the age of 93. His elevation to the College of Cardinals and long service in the Military Ordinariate remain the defining public aspects of his ministry.
