José Manuel Mourinho Félix (12 February 1938 – 25 June 2017) was a Portuguese professional football goalkeeper who later became a coach. Born in Ferragudo in the Algarve, he spent a long playing career in Portugal’s top divisions and is remembered for his steady presence between the posts and subsequent managerial work.

Playing career

Mourinho Félix made his Primeira Liga debut in the 1958–59 season with Vitória de Setúbal and went on to play professionally for sixteen seasons. During that time he represented notable Portuguese clubs including Belenenses, and featured in the Portuguese top flight across multiple campaigns. He also made appearances for the Portugal national team in 1972, representing his country at senior level.

Managerial career

After retiring as a player Mourinho Félix moved into coaching and management. He worked with several clubs at different levels of Portuguese football, taking charge of teams such as Amora, Rio Ave and his former club Vitória de Setúbal. His managerial roles kept him involved in domestic football and contributed to the development of players and squads at those clubs.

Personal life and legacy

Outside his own professional achievements, Mourinho Félix is widely known as the father of José Mourinho, one of the most prominent modern football managers. His career bridged two generations of Portuguese football: as a reliable goalkeeper in mid-20th-century domestic competition and later as a mentor and coach. He died in Setúbal on 25 June 2017 at the age of 79.
