Overview

Jalan Besar MRT Station (DT22) is an underground Mass Rapid Transit station on Singapore's Downtown Line. It serves the Jalan Besar neighbourhood in the Rochor planning area and provides rail access to a part of central Singapore that mixes residential, commercial and light industrial uses. The station takes its name from the adjacent road: "Jalan Besar" is Malay for "big road." The station opened to the public on 21 October 2017.

Location and surroundings

The station sits beneath Jalan Besar at the junction with Weld Road and is close to several local landmarks. Historically notable nearby places include the former Sungei Road Thieves' Market and Sim Lim Tower, both within a short walking distance of some station exits. The surrounding area is served by a network of surface buses and pedestrian routes that link to nearby shopping, schools and residential streets.

Facilities and design

As with other stations on the Downtown Line, Jalan Besar provides standard commuter amenities such as lifts and escalators, barrier-controlled ticketing concourses, accessible routes for passengers with reduced mobility, and platform screen doors for safety. The station's entrances and passages are designed to integrate with the pedestrian environment above ground and to provide sheltered access from nearby roads.

Connections and transfers

Jalan Besar is within walking distance of other Downtown Line and East–West Line stations, enabling convenient out-of-system transfers. Rochor station (also on the Downtown Line) and Bugis station (on the Downtown Line and East–West Line) are reachable on foot in a few minutes, permitting flexible travel across central Singapore. For more information on the rail network see Mass Rapid Transit and local guidance for station interchanges at Singapore.
