Ivan Vakarchuk (6 March 1947 – 4 April 2020) was a prominent Ukrainian academic, physicist and public official. Over several decades he combined scientific work with university leadership and involvement in national education policy. He is widely remembered for his long tenure at the university level and for efforts to modernize higher education in Ukraine.
Early life and education
Vakarchuk was born in Brătușeni in the Moldavian SSR (today part of Moldova). He trained as a physicist and went on to a career that blended research, teaching and administration. Details of his early academic appointments led him to one of Ukraine's oldest universities, where he spent much of his professional life.
Academic career and leadership
Vakarchuk served multiple terms as rector of the University of Lviv, first from 1990 to 2007 and again from 2010 to 2013. He was the father of Svyatoslav Vakarchuk, the lead singer of the rock band Okean Elzy. Ivan Vakarchuk died in Lviv on 4 April 2020 at the age of 73.
