Overview
Irritation is a common, nonspecific response of tissues to an offending stimulus. It often presents as redness, warmth, swelling, itching or pain at the affected site and can affect skin, eyes, mucous membranes and internal linings. In clinical practice the term may describe a mild, superficial reaction or the early stage of a broader inflammatory process.

Typical features include vasodilation, increased blood flow, sensory nerve activation and recruitment of immune cells. While the words "irritation" and "inflammation" overlap, irritation is often used for localized, primarily sensory discomfort or superficial reactions, whereas inflammation denotes a broader cellular immune response that can be acute or chronic.
