Antoni Opolski

Early life and background

Opolski was born in Rozwadów, an area now administered within Lviv Oblast. Details of his early training and formal education placed him in the circle of Polish scientists active before and after the war. Like many contemporaries, his career was shaped by the wartime disruptions and subsequent reorganization of institutions.

Career and research

After the end of the conflict he took up a post at the astronomical observatory of the University of Wrocław, where he pursued observational and theoretical work in astronomy and astrophysics. His duties included conducting observations, supervising students, and participating in the development of the observatory's programmes. He retired from active service in 1983.

Contributions and importance

Opolski contributed to Polish astronomical science during a period of institutional rebuilding. His work supported the continuity of astronomical teaching and research in a university setting, and he is remembered for helping to sustain observational programmes and mentorship of younger astronomers. Though not widely known for a single celebrated discovery, his steady presence helped maintain professional standards in mid-20th-century Polish astronomy.

Later life and legacy

Opolski lived to be 100 years old. He died of natural causes on 17 March 2014 in Wrocław, Poland. His funeral took place a few days later, on 22 March. Colleagues and local institutions remembered him for his long service to university astronomy and for bridging prewar and postwar academic communities.
