The Ialomiţa River (Romanian: Râul Ialomiţa) is a watercourse in the southern part of Romania. It is classified as a river that begins in the Bucegi Mountains of the Carpathians and follows a generally southward route before discharging into the Danube.

Course

The Ialomiţa rises on the slopes of the Bucegi massif and descends through mountain valleys into the lower hills and the Wallachian Plain. Along its way the river shapes local landscapes and provides a corridor between upland and lowland areas. After crossing the plain it reaches the Danube, where its waters join the larger river system.

Human settlement and use

Communities along the Ialomiţa rely on the river for water supply, irrigation and local industry. The river lends its name to Ialomița County and passes near several towns; notable urban centres on or close to its course include Târgoviște and Slobozia. Water levels vary seasonally, and management of flow and flood risk is an ongoing local concern.

Names and local terminology

The uppermost stretch of the river is sometimes referred to as Valea Obârşiei or Obârşia Ialomiţei. These names are commonly used in local descriptions of the headwater valleys and reflect traditional usage for the source area.
