Overview
Hurricane Felix was an intense Atlantic hurricane of the 2007 season that reached Category 5 strength on the Saffir–Simpson scale. At peak intensity it produced sustained winds of about 175 mph. Felix is remembered for its rapid intensification and for making a destructive landfall on the Central American coast in early September 2007. It formed and evolved as part of the broader 2007 Atlantic hurricane season; more details are available in season summaries such as the one linked below.
Meteorological characteristics
Felix developed from a tropical wave that organized over the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean. The cyclone underwent a period of rapid intensification, developing a compact, well-defined eye and extremely strong eyewall winds. Such rapid deepening is a key feature when storms approach Category 5 intensity and can leave little time for preparations in affected areas.
Track and landfall
The storm moved generally westward toward Central America. Before landfall it reached its peak strength, then crossed a narrow stretch of coastal terrain. Felix made landfall on the coast of Nicaragua as a very powerful hurricane, producing destructive winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surge in low-lying coastal areas.
Impact and response
Felix caused widespread damage where it struck, with extensive impacts to homes, infrastructure, crops and communications. Governments and relief organizations carried out evacuations and emergency responses to assist affected communities. Recovery required rebuilding of roads and buildings and support for displaced residents and farmers whose livelihoods were disrupted.
Significance and legacy
Felix was one of two Category 5 hurricanes in the 2007 Atlantic season and remains notable for its intensity at landfall in Central America. The storm highlighted the dangers of rapid intensification and reinforced the importance of early warning systems, evacuation planning and resilient construction in hurricane-prone regions.
