Hobie company and the Hobie Cat

Beyond surfboards, Alter expanded into small recreational boats. He introduced a simple, beach-launchable catamaran that brought sailing within reach of many beachgoers. The Hobie Cat became synonymous with easy, fun sailing on nearshore waters and helped establish the beach-catamarans segment of popular sailing. The Hobie brand grew to include boards, boats, and lifestyle products sold internationally.

Impact and cultural importance

Alter's products and marketing helped define postwar California beach lifestyle. His work supported the growth of surf competitions, retail surf culture, and a global appetite for leisure watercraft designed for casual users. Hobie-branded equipment and imagery remain closely associated with beaches, summer recreation, and the do-it-yourself spirit of early shapers.

In later years Alter withdrew from day-to-day control of the businesses but remained a notable figure to surfers and sailors. He died on March 29, 2014 in Palm Desert, California from cancer, at the age of 80. His name persists as a trademark and as shorthand for a style of accessible, beach-oriented design.
