Overview

Holger Mathew Pihl, Jr., commonly known as Hollie Pihl (1928–2018), was an American jurist and local public figure who spent decades on Oregon's trial bench. A member of the Republican Party in his earlier public life, he was appointed by Governor Tom McCall to the Washington County Circuit Court in 1976 and served as an active judge until 1995. After that he continued to serve as a senior judge until retiring in 2005.

Early life and education

Pihl was born in Portland, Oregon, on September 23, 1928. He pursued higher education in the region, studying at the University of Oregon and later undertaking further legal study at Northwestern University. His education prepared him for a long career in law and public service within Oregon.

Judicial career

Appointed in the mid-1970s, Pihl presided over trial-level cases that ranged across criminal, civil, family and probate matters. As a circuit court judge he managed a busy docket and handled both jury and bench trials, reflecting the broad jurisdiction of Oregon circuit courts. In 1995 he transitioned to senior status, a role that allowed him to continue hearing cases and assisting the court on a reduced or flexible schedule until he stepped away in 2005.

Role, approach and community ties

Pihl was known locally for his long tenure and involvement in Washington County's legal community. Circuit judges in Oregon have duties that include ruling on evidentiary and procedural matters, imposing sentences in criminal cases, and deciding disputes in civil matters; senior judges often help manage caseload fluctuations and mentor less-experienced colleagues. Pihl's career illustrates the way state trial judges combine legal decision-making with community presence.

Later life and legacy

Following full retirement, Pihl remained a recognized figure in his community. He died on October 3, 2018, in Manning, Oregon, at age 90. Obituaries and local remembrances highlighted his decades of service, his role in the local judiciary, and his participation in civic life.
