Overview

Annecy is a commune in southeastern France and serves as the prefecture of the Haute-Savoie department. The town sits at the northern end of Lake Annecy, beneath the foothills of the Alps, and lies about 35 kilometres south of Geneva. With a compact medieval centre, intersecting canals and a lakeside promenade, Annecy is often called "the Venice of the Alps".

Geography and environment

Annecy occupies a transitional zone between lake shore and mountain slopes. The lake is renowned for clear, cold water and is used for swimming, sailing and rowing; a short river system and man-made canals thread the old town. The surrounding countryside includes forested hills and access routes to nearby alpine resorts, making the area popular year-round for hiking, cycling, winter sports and other outdoor pursuits.

History and administration

The town's built heritage reflects medieval and later periods: narrow streets, stone bridges and the Château d'Annecy perched above the old town are visible reminders of earlier centuries. On 1 January 2017 the commune expanded through the merger of several neighbouring communes to create a larger municipal territory. The former communes included:

  • Annecy-le-Vieux
  • Cran-Gevrier
  • Meythet
  • Pringy
  • Seynod

This reorganisation aimed to streamline local administration and coordinate services across the urban area.

Culture, festivals and reputation

Annecy is internationally known for the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, a major annual event that presents films, screenings and industry markets. The city also hosts seasonal markets, live music and cultural programming that highlight regional traditions and contemporary arts. Annecy has been promoted in tourism and international bids; it notably campaigned to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games but the selection went to another city.

Attractions and activities

  • Historic old town with canals, stone bridges and the château above the lake
  • Lakeside promenades and water sports on Lake Annecy
  • Regional Savoyard cuisine, markets and local festivals
  • Outdoor recreation: hiking, cycling, paragliding and access to nearby ski areas

Transport, economy and practical information

Annecy functions as a regional centre for administration, tourism and light industry. Good road and rail links connect the town to the surrounding region and international gateways. Visitors commonly travel via rail or road from Geneva and other nearby cities.
