Overview

Görlitz is a rural district in the Free State of Saxony (Saxony), in eastern Germany. Established during a regional administrative reform in 2008, it brought together several smaller districts and the previously independent urban district centered on the city of Görlitz. The district functions as a regional administrative unit responsible for local services, planning and coordination across urban and rural communities.

Geography and subdivisions

The district occupies a broad swath of eastern Saxony and reaches the international frontiers with Poland and the Czech Republic. Its landscape includes river valleys, low mountain ranges and agricultural plains. Major towns within the district include Görlitz and Zittau, together with numerous smaller towns and municipalities that retain strong local identities.

History and administration

The modern district was created by merging the former rural districts Niederschlesischer Oberlausitzkreis and Löbau‑Zittau with the urban district of Görlitz. This restructuring aimed to streamline administration and improve the delivery of public services. Historically the area belongs to Upper Lusatia and has been shaped by shifting borders, cultural exchange and mixed German and Sorbian traditions.

Economy, culture and transport

The economy combines manufacturing, crafts, agriculture and a growing tourism sector attracted by well‑preserved historical centres, cross‑border urban life and natural landscapes such as nearby mountain foothills. Görlitz city is noted for its architectural heritage and has been a film location. Transport links include regional roads and rail connections that tie the district to other parts of Saxony and neighboring countries.

An important feature of the district is its cross‑border interaction: towns on either side of the Oder–Neisse line maintain close economic and cultural ties with Polish and Czech neighbours. The district also reflects the presence of Sorbian cultural heritage and a mixture of historical influences.
