Gooloogong, New South Wales — small Lachlan River town

Location and setting

Gooloogong sits between several regional centres. It lies about 57 km south‑east of Forbes, around 34 km north‑west of Cowra and some 358 km west of Sydney. The town occupies low river flats and higher adjacent ground beside the Lachlan, giving it a mix of fertile soils used for cropping and grazing and landscapes that are seasonally inundated.

History and development

The locality began as part of a mid‑19th century pastoral lease known as 'Goolagong' held by Edward Sheahan from about 1840. The village itself was formally established in the 1860s, during a period when small service towns sprang up to support sheep and cattle runs across inland New South Wales. Early buildings and allotments were often clustered closer to the river.

Flooding and relocation

Because the original settlement was vulnerable to inundation, significant parts of the town were later moved to higher ground to reduce flood risk. Gooloogong has an association with the bushranger era. John O'Meally, a member of Ben Hall's gang, is buried in an unmarked grave in the town's Anglican cemetery; he was killed during an attempted robbery at Goimbla Station on 19 November 1863.
