Geography and setting

Forbes is located on the banks of the Lachlan River, a major inland waterway of the Murray–Darling Basin. The township sits at roughly 245 metres above sea level and is approximately 380 km west of Sydney. History

The town grew rapidly after a mid‑19th century gold discovery in the Lachlan region, and its layout and early economy were shaped by the goldrush era. Forbes is named after Sir Francis Forbes, the first Chief Justice of New South Wales.
