Constituent communities

The new municipality brought together eight localities that remain distinct as villages or centres within Glarus Nord:

Geography and landscape

Glarus Nord covers landscape types typical of the Glarus region: floor valley along the Linth, steep wooded slopes and the lakeshore of the Walensee. Villages such as Filzbach and Mühlehorn sit close to the lake and serve as access points for water-based recreation. Other villages occupy slightly higher valley terraces or lower mountain flanks; the area provides access to hiking paths, alpine pastures and viewpoints of the Glarus Alps.

History and development

The component settlements have long histories, with medieval origins for many villages and documented events such as the Battle of Näfels in the 14th century, important in local memory. During the 18th and 19th centuries parts of the canton developed textile and related cottage industries; later transport improvements and industrial diversification changed patterns of work and settlement. The 2011 municipal merger was an administrative response to modern governance needs, aiming to streamline services while preserving local identities.
