Filzbach is a village and former municipality in the Swiss canton of Glarus. Since 1 January 2011 it has been part of the larger municipality of Glarus Nord following a regional administrative reorganisation. Filzbach is located in eastern Switzerland and is known locally as a small residential and recreational settlement.
History
Until the beginning of 2011 Filzbach functioned as an independent municipality. A cantonal reform that year merged several small municipalities to form new administrative units; Filzbach was incorporated into Glarus Nord. The change was part of a broader effort in the canton of Glarus to simplify local governance.
Location and landscape
Filzbach sits on the hills above the lakeshore region of eastern Switzerland, offering views over nearby valleys and water. The surrounding landscape is typical of the Glarus area, with mixed forest, alpine meadows and access to mountain trails. Its setting makes the village a base for outdoor activities throughout the year.
Local life and economy
The village has a small, primarily residential population. Local economic activities include services for residents and visitors, seasonal tourism and rural enterprises. Many inhabitants commute to larger towns in the canton or work in recreation and hospitality connected with the nearby mountains.
Recreation
Filzbach attracts people interested in hiking, nature walks and panoramic views. The village provides access to marked paths and open areas typical of the Glarus region; facilities are modest and oriented toward low-impact tourism and outdoor pursuits.
