Glarus Süd is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Glarus and part of the country of Switzerland. Formed as a single administrative unit on 1 January 2011, it is officially registered as the municipality Glarus Süd. The area combines valley settlements, mountain pastures and Alpine scenery and is one of three municipal entities in the canton alongside Glarus and Glarus Nord.

Formation and constituent places

The present municipality was created through the consolidation of thirteen formerly independent municipalities. This change aimed to streamline administration and coordinate services across a predominantly rural and mountainous territory. The component localities include:

Geography and environment

Glarus Süd covers a varied mountain landscape that includes valley floors, steep slopes and high alpine pastures. Settlements are often clustered along river valleys and at the foot of mountain ranges. The municipality includes natural features used for outdoor recreation such as hiking, climbing and winter sports, and it protects locally important habitats and traditional alpine land use.

Economy, transport and services

The local economy relies on a mix of tourism, agriculture (including alpine farming), small-scale manufacturing and services. Hydropower and other mountain-related infrastructure play a significant role in the region's economy and energy supply. Transport connections typically include regional roads and rail links that follow valley corridors, providing access to larger urban centres and supporting seasonal visitor flows.

Culture, governance and points of interest

Communities within Glarus Süd maintain cultural traditions tied to rural and mountain life, with village festivals, local crafts and historic churches. Municipal governance is organised to serve the dispersed population across former municipal boundaries, with local centres providing schools, administration and basic services. Visitors may find marked trails, viewpoints and mountain villages of interest for both recreation and study of Alpine landscapes.

For administrative context and regional coordination, Glarus Süd functions alongside the canton-level authorities and neighboring municipal structures.
