Francie Brolly (born Francis Brolly, 13 January 1938 – 6 February 2020) was a Northern Irish republican politician, traditional musician and teacher. He was born in Dungiven in County Londonderry and became known for combining political activity with cultural work in his native area. Over several decades Brolly was a public figure in the nationalist community and remained active in local and regional debates until his death.

Early life and professional background

Brolly grew up in the Dungiven area and trained as a teacher before entering wider public life. His career in education and his work in local communities informed both his cultural projects and his political outlook. He continued to be associated with local schools and community groups while pursuing music and public service.

Music and cultural activity

Alongside his public duties, Brolly was a well known traditional musician and songwriter. He performed in local venues and events and contributed to the promotion of Irish-language culture and folk music in the north-west of Ireland. His cultural work helped bridge community life and political identity, reflecting a common pattern in Irish republican circles where music, language and politics overlap.

Political career

Brolly was an active republican and a long-standing member of Sinn Féin until he left the party in 2018. He served as a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly for East Londonderry from 2003 until 2010, representing his constituency on a range of local and regional issues. During that period he spoke on behalf of nationalist constituents and took part in Assembly business. For an outline of his formal political role see an Assembly profile: Assembly biography.

Later years and departure from Sinn Féin

In later years Brolly remained a prominent local voice. He resigned from Sinn Féin in 2018, citing differences with the party's direction; observers noted this departure as part of a broader pattern of debate within republican politics. Contemporary accounts and obituaries provide further context: Sinn Féin commentary and local notices from Dungiven sources and other outlets. Additional material and tributes are collected in press coverage and local histories (more on his life).

Brolly died on 6 February 2020 at the age of 82. His life is often recalled for the combination of education, music and politics: he illustrated how cultural activity can be an integral element of public and political identity in Northern Ireland.
