Francesco Perrone (3 December 1930 – 27 April 2020) was an Italian long-distance athlete known for competing in the marathon at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. Born in Cellino San Marco in the Apulia region, he became associated with Italy’s law-enforcement sports organisation and represented his country at national and international road races during the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Background and early life
Perrone grew up in the province of Brindisi, a region with a strong tradition of physical endurance sports. Like many post‑war Italian athletes, his path combined civilian life with service to a state sports group. He trained as a long-distance runner, focusing on the marathon and other endurance events that demand steady pacing, resilience and tactical experience.
Career and affiliation
He was a member of Gruppo Sportivo Fiamme Oro, the sports section of the Italian State Police (Polizia di Stato). Fiamme Oro has supported many Italian athletes by providing training resources, competition opportunities and institutional backing. Perrone competed in domestic championships and selection events that led to his inclusion in Italy’s Olympic squad.
1960 Rome Olympics
Perrone took part in the marathon at the 1960 Summer Olympics, a race that is remembered for its historic winner and dramatic finish. Participation in the Olympic marathon placed Perrone among the elite Italian distance runners of his era and linked his career to one of the most widely viewed athletics events of the postwar period. Later life and legacy
After his competitive career Perrone remained a figure in the athletics community, viewed as part of a generation that helped popularise long-distance running in Italy. His service with a police sports group reflected a common Italian model where state institutions supported athletes’ development. He is remembered by regional clubs and by observers of mid‑20th century Italian sport for his Olympic representation and dedication to endurance running.
