Physical and chemical properties

In pure form ammonium chlorate typically crystallizes as colorless solids and is readily soluble in water. Chemically it behaves as a strong oxidizer because of the chlorate ion. When heated or otherwise destabilized it can decompose exothermically, sometimes releasing gases and heat. Its behaviour is dominated by the interaction between a reducing cation (ammonium) and an oxidizing anion, which makes many of its solid forms unstable.

Preparation and reactions

Laboratory preparation is generally carried out in solution by combining a source of chlorate with an ammonium source under controlled conditions; for example, neutralization of chloric acid with ammonia or mixing aqueous solutions of compatible salts. Crystallization from solution may produce the solid, but care is required because slow evaporation or seeding can lead to unexpectedly sensitive crystals. It reacts strongly with organic matter and many reducing agents, and may decompose on heating, shock, or friction.
