Flavors of Entanglement
Flavors of Entanglement is the seventh studio album by Canadian-American singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette. It was released in Germany, Ireland and the Benelux countries on 30 May, internationally on 2 June and in the USA on 10 June 2008. In the German-speaking countries and in the USA, the album reached top ten positions in the charts, in the UK it reached position 15.
Origin
In March 2005, Morissette told Billboard Magazine that she felt ready to begin a new project. She had already filled four notebooks with material, usually starting work on an album after two. October 2006, she told TV Guide in an interview that the number of notebooks she had filled had risen to seven, and that she planned to begin work in the studio in the next few weeks. At the same time, she described her relationship with actor Ryan Reynolds as marriage-like, and expressed the suggestion that they would marry sooner or later. Morissette and Reynolds had met in 2002 and dated for two years before entering into a liaison in 2004. They had temporarily split in June 2006, but had then gotten back together. However, in early February 2007, they announced their permanent separation. Reynolds subsequently entered into a relationship with Scarlett Johansson. During the breakup, Morissette was already working on Flavors of Entanglement. The personal crisis had a strong influence on the progress of the work.
Morissette hired Guy Sigsworth, known for his work for Björk, Seal and Madonna, as producer.
Topics
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Morissette described the album as a mix of "friend and lightness" comparable to So-Called Chaos, her 2004 studio album, but with the added feeling of being gripped by the realization that she has hit rock bottom. The album contains lyrics with autobiographical references, especially to the artist's personal relationships. At the same time, it addresses political conflicts, Morissette told Billboard magazine. She explained: "Really, in the end, the personal struggles are political. Our emotions align themselves with larger symptomatic things in the world. " (German: "Ultimately, our personal struggles are political. Our emotions align themselves with larger symptomatic things in the world.")
