Geography and landscape

History and development

Ferry County was organized near the end of the 19th century and takes its name from an early state leader. Settlement accelerated with mineral discoveries in the late 1800s and small-scale mining and ranching shaped early communities. Over time forestry and agriculture became important, while some historic mining towns evolved into service centers for the surrounding countryside.
