Political career

Rahbar served in the Islamic Consultative Assembly — Iran's national parliament — from 2004 until 2016. During that period she was part of the conservative political current and represented a Tehran constituency. Her tenure spanned three consecutive parliamentary terms, during which members typically take part in committee work, constituency service and legislative debates.

Roles and activities

As a parliamentarian Rahbar participated in the routine duties of an MP: proposing and reviewing legislation, attending hearings and representing local interests to the national government. Like many of her colleagues, she engaged with social and political issues relevant to her constituents and party affiliations in Tehran.

Death and context

On 7 March 2020 Rahbar died in Tehran from complications related to COVID-19 at age 56. Her death occurred during the early, severe phase of the pandemic in Iran and attracted attention because she had been re-elected but had not yet resumed parliamentary office. She was reported among a number of Iranian officials and public figures affected by the outbreak.

Significance and legacy

Rahbar's career illustrates the presence of women in Iran's formal political institutions and the role conservative legislators play within the Islamic Republic. Her passing underlined the reach of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic into political life and prompted public discussion about health risks facing elected officials and frontline workers.
