Escherichia is a genus of Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria found mainly in the intestines of warm-blooded animals. Includes E. coli; members range from benign gut microbes to important pathogens and research models.

Escherichia is a genus of Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria in the family Enterobacteriaceae. The best-known species is Escherichia coli, which commonly inhabits the lower digestive tract of humans and other warm-blooded animals (human intestines and comparable niches). While many Escherichia strains live harmlessly as commensals, some can cause illness and are closely monitored in public health and food safety.

The genus was named for the German pediatrician and bacteriologist Theodor Escherich, who studied bacteria of the infant gut in the late 19th century. His work led to the recognition of E. coli as a common intestinal inhabitant and later to the formal organization of related species into the genus.

Uses and importance

Escherichia species play varied roles: many strains are essential members of normal gut flora and contribute to digestion and vitamin production; E. coli also serves as a foundational model organism in molecular biology and biotechnology. Conversely, certain lineages are used as indicators of fecal contamination in water testing and food safety programs.

Pathogenic strains and public health

Some Escherichia strains cause disease, ranging from urinary tract infections to severe intestinal illness (for example, enterohemorrhagic and enterotoxigenic types). Antibiotic resistance among pathogenic isolates has become a clinical concern, prompting surveillance and prevention measures.

Escherichia is closely related to other Enterobacteriaceae such as Enterobacter and Klebsiella but is distinguished by genetic, biochemical and ecological traits. Several species besides E. coli—for example, E. albertii and E. fergusonii—are recognized within the genus, each with different host ranges and clinical relevance.
